This is because there is always a slight difference between the theories learned in the classroom and their application in the real world. Therefore, it is important that people be keen while deciding on which fields they would major their studies on in order to be competent in their industries. However, the parents, in most cases, try to get involved in the education of their children and try to encourage them, discourage or, in some cases, force them to study certain courses which are more preferred to them (Wong & Liu, 2010). For example, most parents try to force their children to study science-related courses such as medicine and engineering courses. (1) This may be a great challenge for an individual either in academics or in the professional world. In this paper, we will be discussing the reasons why most parents force their children to undertake science-related courses. Additionally, we will be able to understand the effects that this kind of situation may have on the future life of the student academically or professionally.(2)Reasons why parents want their children to study science-related courses.Parents have a very important role in identifying the talents of their children and nurturing them. Generally, it is the wish of every parent to have academically successful children (Wong & Liu, 2010). This is because it is believed that when a child succeeds in academics, there is a higher chance for them to get higher-paying jobs in the future. Additionally, most parents think that taking a science course like engineering assures someone ready job opportunity. However, taking a science-related course such as nursing, medicine, or even engineering may be a great challenge for the child.(3) A good number of parents base their argument on the fact that they want their children to be competitive in the job market and also be able to enjoy high living standards(4). Some of the students live their lives to regret having taken certain courses instead of othersAnother reason why you would find a parent encouraging or rather pressing their child to take a certain science course is the need for them to follow the parent’s steps (Varlik & Apaydin, 2020). For example, if one of the parents is an engineer, he will want the child to be an engineer like him in order to make sure that the legacy of the parent does not become extinct(5). This, however, may be difficult for the child to fulfill since he or she may be talented differently. Besides, it is not a guarantee that if a parent likes a certain thing, the children would like it too.On the other hand, most people give a lot of superiority to science courses more than any of the other courses taught in schools and institutions of higher learning (6). This type of stereotype has affected many people and made them think that other courses are less important. In such a case, if the parent supports that ideology, which beliefs on the superiority of science and engineering cases, then they may end up forcing their children to take these courses even if it’s not they are not interested in them.(7)Besides, science and engineering courses are expensive in terms of the tuition fees paid or even due to the resources needed for the study. However, whenever parents are more financially stable to meet these expenses, they may feel encourage their children to take the course, not because they have chosen to, but because they have the ability to meet the required costs(8). However, this may pose very tough challenges to the student as they end up taking very challenging courses that they obviously not interested in.Generally, people measure career success by huge salaries or holding more favorable positions in different organizations (Wong & Liu, 2010). In this case, the science and engineering related cases are considered to be offering higher salaries, which leads to higher living standards. Therefore, most parents force the children to study courses which assure them well-paying jobs in the future (9). However, the students may not have had what it takes to succeed in this, or simply they may not have an interest in them. Effects of forcing children to study science-related and engineering courses When parents get too much involved and try to control the choices for courses and universities for students, there is a great probability that the student may end up enrolling for a course that they did not wish to study. Also, the student may end up joining an institution which he or she was never interested in. On the other hand, parents may choose to force their child to undertake a course he or she is unwilling but later turn out to be a huge success. This means that parents’ involvement in the career choice of a student may have both negative and positive effects on the academic and professional of the student (Varlik & Apaydin, 2020).Firstly, when a student enrolls in a course they did not want, for reasons like trying to follow the footsteps of their parents, they end up struggling academically. This struggle may be reflected in poor grades and academic performance, which is below average(11). It is perfectly clear that when a person is less interested in something, he or she puts less commitment on them, and therefore the student may end up failing in their final exams or get expelled from the institution due to poor academic performance. When it comes to profession, when a person gets a job in a field he or she is less interested in, they may not serve as required. The person may end up making serious errors in the workplace due to work-related stress or depression, which may lead to huge financial losses to the company they work for (Wong & Liu, 2010). Besides, their conduct in the workplace may tarnish the name of the company, making it to lose customers. For example, a person who becomes a nurse or a doctor against their will may not put the lives of people in danger instead of saving them (12). This is because these jobs are more sensitive, and any error committed may cost the life of a person. A nurse or a surgeon who ends killing three consecutive patients in surgery may scare away potential customers in that hospital and also give a picture of the competency of the services offered there. (13)Research has proved that students almost 20% of students in the universities and colleges regret wrong career choices, with a bigger percentage blaming the parents for forcing them to take the course or choose the institution.(14) These regrets usually make the students seriously ill, and most of them end up falling into depression (Varlik & Apaydin, 2020). In worst cases, stressed parents end up in drug abuse, poor academic performance in class, and in worst scenarios, suicide may be witnessed when the situation is not controlled early enough.On the other hand, parents force the children to take these courses, and they may prove to be completely difficult for the child to undertake them and therefore be a need to change them after some time. This will lead to huge financial losses to the parents as the science courses, and the engineering courses are very expensive. Hence, the parents will have to bear the cost of the lost finances, which were spent in paying for the fees. For this reason, parents should allow their children to conduct enough research on the courses they are willing to take based on their interests and potential.(15) Even when they know the best potential of the child, they should use more polite ways to make the child accept the course and develop an interest in it (Wong &Liu, 2010)Possible solutionsMost challenges that people face in their academic and career lives result from the wrong choice of careers. And as we have seen above, this may be caused by the parents who force them to take various academic courses or even make them explore certain jobs. In order to minimize these challenges, proper investigations or analysis should be conducted before deciding on which course to undertake, the choice of institution. The following ways may help minimize the challenges.Firstly, parents should build a good academic relationship with their children so that they will be able to advise or guide them in academic matters without forcing them. The parents should also discover the innate skills and talents of their children in the early stages of life and also consider the interests of the children ber=fore offering life-changing advice on the choice of careers or institutions of higher learning. When offering advice, parents should also make sure they consider the ideas of the children instead of forcing them to take courses in which the parents feel that they will be more helpful to the child.(16)In the case of students who have already enrolled in the wrong courses due to pressure from their parents, they can change the courses if possible so that they can enroll in the courses in which they are more interested. By doing this, they can be able to give their best performance and be able to acquire as much knowledge as they require for application in their future career jobs. This will help them avoid academic stress while in school and also give them an opportunity to enjoy the courses that they like. The results can be reflected in their better academic performance and quality services in their jobs.(17)Conclusion To conclude, as we have seen in the previous paragraphs, most people face academic and professional challenges resulting from wrong choices of careers or courses. The reason for the wrong choice of profession being pressure from parents who wish their children to follow their footsteps in careers. Additionally, we have seen that most parents force their children to study science-related courses or engineering is because they are more paying and are associated with higher standards of living.However, we have seen that forcing children to choose these courses may affect their academic performance as well as their performance in professional life. This may lead to work-related stress or depression. These problems can be solved by proper identification of the children’s talents, development of a good parent-student relationship in order to enable them to advise the students about their careers without having to force them.
